Make your outdoors amazing with these sustainable furniture

Outer outdoor furniture is sustainably-made and gorgeous to look at. The materials are also tough and long-lasting. To top it all off, the design is a blueprint for a sustainable future in furniture.

Outer furniture is made with OuterShell fabric, a patented durable material made out of 100% recycled materials. It rolls out over the cushions to provide protection against daily weather, dirt and debris.

Furthermore, furniture here is constructed with items like all-weather wicker, teak and aluminum. The all-weather wicker is handmade and built over a steel frame while the frames are hand-welded. A master welder assembles each item using synthetic wicker. It’s a proprietary material made with polyethylene, a material that is completely recyclable.

On the other hand, the teak is part of a sustainability program. For each teak tree harvested, three new saplings are planted. Just one teak tree can absorb 10 kilograms of carbon every single year. So each new tree that is planted is one more step toward saving the Earth. It is also responsibly-sourced.

Additionally, the entire teak collection from Outer is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. This is the leading international authority on sustainable forest management. The certification guarantees the teak wood is harvested from sustainably managed forests.

Outer also focuses on taking a sustainable approach through every single phase of manufacturing and shipping. First, durable materials are carefully selected. Materials are repurposed and everything is easy to recycle.

Moreover, all the fabric is a durable woven yard that is resistant to UV light and color fading. It also won’t create dye runoff that ends up in the water supply. Fun and creative ideas for upcycling leftover candy wrappers

If you look at candy wrappers as nothing more than food waste, it’s time to get the creative juices flowing! While you’re busy noshing on a chewy Starburst, enjoying a bite of dark chocolate with a cup of tea, or discussing the right way to nibble through a peanut butter cup, place your wrappers aside for some crafty upcycling fun when the candy is gone.

All shapes and sizes of wrappers can act as material for myriad sweet creations. The best part, aside from recycling materials to keep them out of the trash, is these simple reminders of tasty treats bring joy. Who can look at a York Peppermint Patty or Tootsie Roll package and not crack at least a bit of a grin?

This project keeps full-sized packaging mostly intact, so it’s likely to incite a wicked craving. The pattern offered up by Punkin Patterns uses Skittles or M&M bags, so you may want to start there. With a zipper, some small pieces of fabric and a few other supplies, you’ll have this project zipped up in no time.

The only limitation here is your imagination. Think of candy wrappers as colorful bits of paper and go nuts designing patterns with the different words, shapes, images and colors. Fold them, tear them or keep them intact. Lay them into a unique or repetitive design to your liking.

Make coasters, vases for a bouquet of Valentine’s Day roses, or put together a pattern for your favorite small table. Again, when you think of candy wrappers as simple, colorful paper, the world opens into a new, sweet dimension. With origami, you can decide whether you want the result to resemble the original package or just take advantage of the design. Either way, origami techniques leave you with decorative shapes and interesting animals. It’s a great art project for kids’ hands. The practice helps develop fine motor skills. It’s also good therapy for those recovering from a stroke or other event that affects dexterity.

Making jewelry out of the wrappers, box materials or other packaging from candy yields wearable art that takes viewers right back to their childhood highlight reel. Perhaps friends, family and co-workers will find as much joy wearing candy wrapper art as they did discovering the goodies the first time around. 

Choose your wrappers. Then get busy twisting, folding and bending them into shape. Connect them into a bracelet or necklace. Attach hardware for earrings. You can even make a bracelet from a single flat wrapper.

Where Picasso had paint, you have Warheads and Whoppers wrappers. The beauty of this project is the limitless possibilities. Choose everything from the size of artwork to the colors, pattern, texture and design. You can go with a theme like balloons, landscapes or puppies. Consider creating a portrait, indoor or outdoor plants, pottery, or a meandering pathway. 

Bits of wrappers can spell words, and similar or contrasting colors from various wrappers can bring in a vibrant mosaic appeal. One really creative design is to use a particular brand of wrappers, such as Butterfinger. Then use pieces of many packages to ‘rebuild’ a Butterfinger as the final piece of art — made from many.

This cute and creative hair clip by Doodlecraft makes a fun accessory for a costume, class party, or birthday girl. Whatever the event, recycling a candy wrapper into a hair bow is quick, easy, and can be just the solution you need in a pinch.

There are many ways to go about creating a candy curtain. Start by shaping your candy wrappers into bows, origami animals or another design that matches your theme. Attach the candy wrappers to strands of fishing line or dental floss, ensuring they lay the right way when the curtain is hanging. Fill different strands to the height you desire. Once you’ve completed all of them, you can attach them to a doorway or tie them to a hoop hanging from the ceiling. Who knows, your candy curtain may become a permanent part of your interior design

Industrial origami turns recycled steel into STILRIDE scooters

Swedish startup STILRIDE has created a process to use industrial origami to fold recycled steel into electric scooters. You read that right. The goal is to create a more sustainable way of manufacturing vehicles. The result is one of the most innovative and disruptive things in the manufacturing or auto industry in recent years. STILRIDE combines origami folding techniques — an ancient art and science in Japan that can create all kinds of products through intricate folding — with laser cutting and industrial robotics.

The electric scooter is called the STILRIDE SUS1 prototype, and it’s ready for test drives. STILRIDE founder Tue Beijer is an industrial designer who was in the auto industry for 20 years before founding this startup. With managing director and co-founder Jonas Nyvang and a team in Sweden, Beijer wants to build the world’s most sustainable and stylish electric scooter.

“We strongly believe in the electrification of personal mobility and see the need for a new breed of mid-range commuting vehicle made in harmony with nature,” Beijer said.

Industrial origami can create clean-energy-powered personal mobility vehicles through sustainable production techniques. The startup wants to challenge the traditional manufacturing methods by using origami folding to make the most of metal’s characteristics and geometric nature.

The company began as part of the Metalliska research program, coordinated by Jernkontoret and funded by The Swedish Innovation Agency Vinnova. According to the designers, the LIGHT.FOLD technique was years in the making, during which time they experimented with taking steel sheets as raw material through the industrial origami process using a proprietary technology.

Now, several Swedish industrial and technology companies are joining the project to find additional uses for the production technology. Partners include product development company Semcon, steel engineering workshop Brantheim, research institute RISE IVF and global stainless steel manufacturer Outokumpu. The partnerships have resulted in the STILRIDE SUS1 having sustainable and efficient batteries, a top-of-the-line electronic motor, and other innovative tech features.

New Zealand eco-lodge Camp Glenorchy is net-positive

Nestled in the valley between the Humboldt and Richardson mountains is Camp Glenorchy, New Zealand’s first net-positive eco-lodge. The Headwaters Eco-lodge at Camp Glenorchy was selected as one of Time Magazine’s World’s 100 Greatest Places in 2019. Its design encourages sustainable living while minimizing the impact on the lush surroundings.

The Headwaters opened its doors in early 2018 with a commitment to blending rustic, authentic experiences with comfortable, sustainable lodging. The hotel has been meticulously designed to operate in line with the Living Building Challenge (LBC), one of the most rigid environmental design certifications globally. The LBC uses the concept of a flower with seven “petals” or categories that support local communities and environments. These categories include place, materials, beauty, water, energy, health and happiness, and equity.

Beauty, materials and place

The eco-lodge’s spatial design emulates regional architecture in the rural community and encourages guest interaction. The materials were locally-sourced and carefully selected to repurpose raw material wherever possible. This includes recycled corrugated iron and reclaimed timber to evoke a cozy, homey atmosphere. These spaces are further augmented by works of local craftspeople and artists that celebrate the region’s culture.

The landscaping mimics local topography and incorporates native flora to support insects, birds and other critters. Additionally, certain plant species have been planted specifically for consumption. These include various vegetables, fruits and herbs that supply the campsite’s kitchen.

Water

Camp Glenorchy actively monitors and manages the site’s water consumption. The lodge strives to use significantly less water than other similar facilities. While traditional hotels use up to 400 liters of water per day per guest, at Camp Glenorchy, the average guest only uses 82 liters of water a day.

Groundwater reserves are carefully preserved through conscious water storage, reuse and disposal efforts. Rainwater is captured from the roofs and stored in 60,000-liter underground cisterns. The water undergoes treatment using natural processes for drinking and use in sinks and showers. These appliances use low-flow fittings for water efficiency.

In fact, the site has showers with the lowest flow faucets in the country, averaging at 5 liters a minute. Further, wastewater is reduced by treating grey and black water for irrigation. Odor-free composting toilets are also installed to prevent waste from entering municipal sewers. Instead, the waste helps generate compost for the landscaping across the site.

Energy

Similar to the measures taken to conserve water, Camp Glenorchy strives to use 50% less energy than similar lodging facilities. The site works toward this by integrating high-efficiency passive systems. The spaces have been carefully designed to achieve Net Zero Energy Building certification. This means that the site only consumes as much energy as generated by renewable resources. Additionally, the lodge uses a solar garden comprised of 589 photovoltaic panels to generate 215 megawatts annually. This powers all 14 chalets and the eco-lodge. Excess energy is stored in batteries and used at nighttime.

Design strategies also support energy conservation, even when maintaining comfortable temperatures in winter. The glazing, building envelope, and building orientation all maximize solar exposure in the cold months and warm spaces alongside efficient ground-source heat pumps. In summer, the same systems passively cool the spaces.

Health, happiness and equity

One of Camp Glenorchy’s key goals is creating a safe and healthy environment through environmentally-friendly strategies. The site’s well-designed spaces incorporate salvaged materials and energy-efficient systems that minimize environmental impact and maximize human comfort.

Furthermore, the camp benefits the community at large. Profits from the camp’s operations go to the Glenorchy community trust. This way, residents can decide where to invest their funds to benefit the community. The space has also been selected as a civil defense location, which can shelter community members in the event of a natural disaster.

Through a multi-faceted approach to sustainability, the Headwaters Lodge at Camp Glenorchy integrates well-designed spaces with energy-efficient systems without sacrificing human comfort. Embodying a holistic approach to conscious living, the lodge inspires guests to continue making environmentally-friendly choices upon their return back home.

The treadmill desk that doesn't need electricity

Walkolution, a German company founded in 2017 by Dr. Eric Sohngen and Frank Ackermann, created a non-motorized treadmill that can be used as a walking desk or an indoor exercise machine. The unique and stylish treadmills are used by corporate and private clients in over 40 countries. Walkolution aims to solve the health problems that sedentary work create.

A non-electric treadmill may sound simple, but Walkolution treadmills are made from proprietary technology protected by international patents. Even better, the treadmills are engineered and manufactured at Walkolution’s eco-certified production site.

“It is obvious that we can only live healthy if the environment allows us to do so,” Walkolution said. “We have therefore committed ourselves from the very beginning to adhere to strict ecological guidelines for our products. For example, we heat our production halls with our own wood waste, we only use wood from sustainably operated foresters and we have also committed ourselves to the goal of planting one million trees.”

Although many companies use waste products to make new products, Walkolution uses their own waste to replace traditional sources of energy for production. The company wants to illuminate on the health benefits of their treadmills for people while creating a circular economy for their production facilities.

“Sitting is the new smoking,” Walkolution said. Sitting has serious health consequences that include not only weight gain and back pain, but also significantly higher risks of cancer, heart attack, stroke, depression and even dementia.

How do you solve the problem when most modern jobs require desks? Walkolution Founder Dr. Eric Sohngen is a medical doctor by training and former practicing physician. The health problems brought on by sedentary work and lifestyle bothered Dr. Sohngen. As a result, he created a healthier workstation that allows people to work and stay healthy at the same time.

Dr. Sohngen built the first prototype of a walking desk when he was a medical student in 2006. He would go through 50 more prototypes before the first Walkolution treadmill desk went into production in 2018 in its current form.

Mind the Cork sets the standard for sustainable products

Cork is one of the most sustainable natural materials on the planet. It’s renewable, recyclable and biodegradable. The cork industry also directly contributes to healthy ecosystems and strong economies. So it makes sense to “Mind the Cork,” as one London-based design studio calls themselves, when looking for home goods that provide function and eco-friendly craftsmanship.

A passion project of Founder Jenny Espirito Santo, Mind the Cork is seeing continued growth. More and more eco-focused customers and like-minded partners are touting the brand.

“As the business continues to grow beyond a one-woman band, my goal is to build a brand that has fairness, honesty and positivity at its core,” Santo said.

Furthermore, cork offerings include several types and styles of planters, from quite small to medium-sized. The website clearly states the care and maintenance requirements for plants and pots. Alternatively, the planters can be used as desk accessories, bathroom organizers or any other creative purpose. Additionally, Mind the Cork also produces card holders, cork bowls and storage vessels with 11 lid options.

“I work closely with craftspeople and small factories in the U.K. and Portugal,” Santo described the process. “They are all an integral part of Mind the Cork’s production process, and I believe in working flexibly, paying fairly and creating solid relationships built on mutual trust and respect.”

As a result, the process starts with the cork oak woodlands, primarily located in Portugal. These trees provide wildlife habitat and a healthy ecosystem for plants and animals. The best part: no tree is harmed in the production of cork because there’s no need to cut the trees down.

In fact, cork is sourced from the outer layer of the bark by shaving it away. The tree responds by growing more bark in a regenerative process. That means it actually absorbs three to five times more CO2 than unharvested trees. Cork trees are first harvested after about 25 years and then about every 10 years after that. It’s a slow process, but while the trees work to grow cork, they bring myriad benefits to the environment.

Therefore, Mind the Cork respects this process after harvest by producing collections in small batches, minimizing waste and reusing materials whenever possible. Although still working towards 100% plastic-free shipping, the company uses recycled cardboard and paper packaging whenever possible. The use of plastic is only as a last resort.

The environmental impact of Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras was a long-standing occurrence in other parts of the world before the French introduced it to Louisiana in 1699. The details of how the original ‘carnival’ evolved into today’s annual festivities are a little unclear. What we do know is that people will find any reason for a party! Mardi Gras is no exception, with yearly events that range from small gatherings to elaborate celebrations. While the celebrations take center stage, the environmental impact of Mardi Gras is also important to discuss.

To understand more about Mardi Gras, let’s get into some of its history. Founded in 1872, the Rex krewe helped establish many modern Mardi Gras traditions in New Orleans. Still a driving force today, Rex is credited with designating the now widely recognized colors of the event. Purple, green, and gold are the trademark combination you’ll see on everything from costumes to decor, and each color has significance. Purple and gold represent royal colors, but Rex also labeled purple to symbolize justice, green to mean faith, and gold to represent power.

Mardi Gras beads often come in these colors, but the now-ubiquitous beads weren’t added to the celebration until the 1900s. The 1960s and 70s introduced an explosion of plastic bead options. Thanks to the common use-and-dispose mindset during that era, beads began to make up a copious amount of the waste produced during Mardi Gras each year. Over the years, the celebration has continued to accumulate unimaginable amounts of drink cups, party favors, decorations, masks, props, costume parts and so much more. Year after year, the city of New Orleans spends millions of dollars hauling away tons of garbage following the parades and parties. 

Much of this waste is plastic, a product of the petroleum industry. This isn’t the only problem petroleum has caused for the New Orleans area, though. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon spill off the nearby coastline became the largest spill in U.S. history. In January 2022, another oil spill caused by a corroded pipeline took place just outside the city. Now it seems the region is battling the petroleum from two angles — when it comes out of the ground and when it’s turned into wasteful single-use items.

Obviously, this kind of disregard for the environment is worth bringing to the headlines. It’s not even just the waste that litters the streets, later to be hauled to landfills, that drives the issue. It’s much bigger. 

New Orleans is built on the water, which means it has an intimate relationship with the health of its waterways and wildlife. What goes into the water can come back to destroy the city, as multiple hurricanes and resulting floods have shown. Mardi Gras, with its copious indulgences, brings friction along with festivities. Take, for example, those ubiquitous beads. Not only will the inexpensive, non-recyclable plastic material spend eternity in the atmosphere, but some beads have equally harmful ingredients to consider. Some studies have found potentially-unsafe levels of lead, cadmium and other elements in the beads. While it’s bad enough to think a child could be putting lead into their mouth, that same lead is also leaching into the soil or flowing directly into the water, including the nearby Lake Pontchartrain and the Mississippi River.

All of these waterways eventually end up in the Gulf of Mexico, so any pollution affects fish and other marine animals along the way. In turn, humans and other animals that eat the fish ingest those toxins. It’s a simple snapshot of a system where we pull resources from the ground, use more resources to make cheap trinkets, toss our trash all about, and allow the chemicals to seep back into our food and drinking water. 

We’re certainly not the first to bring this topic to light, and several companies have popped up offering solutions to the problem while encouraging people to celebrate responsibly in a traditional — and low waste — manner. For example, Atlas Handmade Beads sells Mardi Gras “Big Bead” Necklaces handcrafted out of recycled magazine paper by artisans in Uganda. Founder and New Orleans local Kevin Fitzwilliam said, “It’s so insane that we have to keep turning a blind eye to this trash—why can’t we keep the things that are incredibly beautiful about this tradition, but do them in a better way?”

Louisiana State University Biological Sciences professor Naohiro Kato agrees. Using resources at LSU, Kato created plant-based biodegradable Mardi Gras beads entirely out of large amounts of microscopic algae, or microalgae. 

The truth is, whether you’re looking for decorations, masks, beads, drink cups, costumes, dinnerware, table coverings, floats or any other products, you can find a solution that’s reusable, recyclable, biodegradable and/or plastic-free. But the biggest challenge might be changing expectations of visitors who expect the ‘throws’ in favor of being content with a colorful and entertaining experience.
