HOW TO: Recycle a sweater into a cuddly pillow for your couch

Making pillows out of old sweaters is easy to do, and has the double bonus of upcycling materials, and making your house even cozier.

What You'll Need:

  • Two old sweaters, large enough to fit your desired pillows (if you don’t have any old sweaters in your closet, try a thrift shop. Wash and dry the sweaters before you start.)
  • Two or more throw pillows with their slipcovers removed
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread, scissors, pins, needles, colored pencil or chalk, ruler or measuring tape
  • Four buttons

Button Pillow Step 1: Measure and Mark

For the buttoned pillowcase, start by smoothing out and pinning together the two sides of the bottom hem – this will form the opening of the pillowcase. Pinning will keep the sweater hem from stretching out and getting misshapen when you sew it.

With a colored pencil or chalk, use a ruler or measuring tape to mark out a square that is approximately ½ inch larger than your pillow measurements on all sides. For the button pillow, we only needed to cut two sides of the sweater to create the right size square: the bottom hem forms the opening, and the right seam we left intact.

Button Pillow Step 2: Sew And Cut Sides

Using a wide straight stitch, slowly sew the seam you just marked on the two sides of the square, being cautious not to stretch the sweater too much, which can pucker the seam. Trim off the excess sweater material, close to the seam you just created.

Once you’ve cut out the complete square, finish the newly cut seam edges with a zig-zag or overlock stitch, to keep the sweater seam from unraveling.

Button Pillow Step 3: Add Buttons

Turn the pillow right-side out and remove the pins along the hem. Measure out and mark a spot for 4 equally spaced buttons along the inside edge hem of the sweater. Use a needle and thread to hand sew the buttons on. Next, mark out four corresponding spots on the upper hem with a pin. Using scissors, snip a tiny hole and unravel it just large enough for each button. Use a needle and thread to hand sew the edge of the buttonhole so the yarn doesn't continue to unravel.

Button Pillow Step 4:  Finish Pillow

Place the pillow inside the new pillowcase and button it shut – you’re done!

Envelope Pillow Step 1: Measure and Mark

Unlike the button pillow, you’ll be cutting three pieces for this version. Start by using a colored pencil or chalk and a ruler to mark out a square that is approximately ½ inch larger than your pillow measurements on just the front half of the sweater (or the part you intend to use for the front of the pillow). Cut this piece out, but be careful not to cut through both layers like you did for the button pillow

Next, measure out two overlapping pieces – we used the sweater’s border here – to form the envelope back. The two pieces must overlap at least 3-5 inches, and when overlapped, should form the same measurements as above (a square approximately ½ inch wider than the pillow measurements).

Envelope Pillow Step 2: Create Pillow Back

Pin together the envelope back with the two pieces overlapped 3-5 inches. Ensure that you have them aligned evenly, then pin securely together. Stitch the side seams together just where the two pieces overlap.

Envelope Pillow Step 3: Sew Pillow Together

Place the two pieces together, right sides together, and pin securely. Slowly sew all four edges of the pillow together using a wide straight stitch, moving slowly so as not to pucker the fabric too much. Finish the edges of all four seams with a zig zag stitch to prevent the sweater from unraveling.

Envelope Pillow Step 4:  Finish Pillow

Turn the pillow right side out through the envelope opening. Insert the pillow and smooth it shut.

Toss your cozy new cushions on your bed, a chair, or the couch and enjoy!

Terraces Home combines architecture with urban agriculture in Vietnam

True to its name, the Terraces Home features a terraced rooftop with planting beds and wooden surfaces. The terraces mimic the Vietnamese rice fields and each level is backed by a strip of glazing that lets natural light into the interior and provides framed views of the plants and sky. Irrigation systems fed by recycled rainwater are installed along the length of the roof to ensure constant watering year-round. The plants help protect the home against solar heat gain, dust, and traffic noise.

“Terraces home serves as a constant reminder of the origin of paddy rice civilization in a flat world context threatened by various types of pollution currently at an alarming level,” write the architects. “It is, at the same time, expected to promote the expansion of farmland plots in urban areas with a view to securing food supplies for future life.” The home is entered through black perforated folding doors that open up to a large play area with a tall ceiling. The ground floor, which steps up from the play area, includes the living room, dining room, and kitchen, while the upper levels house the bedroom, study, workshop, and additional multifunctional spaces. The home is set back from a perforated wall in the rear that lets in natural light and ventilation.

7 bee hotels providing habitats for our favorite pollinators

Giant K-abeilles Hotel for Bees pavilion by AtelierD offered resting place for bees and humans

For the 2012 Muttersholtz Archi Festival, AtelierD designed the K-abeilles Hotel for Bees. Shaped like a huge honeycomb, the wood pavilion was comprised of hexagonal components, some open and some packed with natural materials where bees could nest. Humans could sit inside the pavilion on hexagonal seats, close enough to marvel at and appreciate the bustling bees.

Tea company Taylors of Harrogate creates The Grand Beedapest Hotel inspired by Wes Anderson

UK tea company Taylors of Harrogate, whose blends depend on fruits pollinated by bees, decided to raise awareness about bee population decline with an adorable luxury bee hotel. They teamed up with Kew Gardens to create the Grand Beedapest Hotel, evocative of the magnificent hotel in Wes Anderson's most recent film. Details like a peppermint leaf swimming pool and lemongrass ginger bar added to the quirky charm of the bee hotel.

PopTarts Works designers utilize laser cut, recycled cardboard to make Beehive Hotel for an entire bee colony

The designers of PopTarts Works decided to create their Beehive Hotel to help out the bees of Toronto. Using recycled corrugated cardboard, they made a five-foot-high habitat that resembles wild hives. They installed the hotel and bees speedily began to nest inside. The Beehive Hotel has enough room for a whole mason bee colony, whose members can pollinate as much as 2,000 flowers every day.

University student Tom Back created Thrive Hive to imitate bees' natural habitats

While a student at Kingston University, Tom Back of Thumb Designs created his Thrive Hive out of straw and wood. The hive design was meant to more closely match natural habitats of bees than box homes do, and woven straw insulation ensured the bees inside would flourish even in severe weather. His concept is one that has potential for urban areas as it could be used on a balcony or in a small backyard. Back showed his design at the London Design Festival.

University at Buffalo architecture students get in on the bee-saving action with steel cylindrical Elevator B bee skyscraper

When a bee colony was found dwelling in an old grain mill, University at Buffalo architecture students decided to design them a better home. Courtney Creenan, Scott Selin, Lisa Stern, Daniel Nead, and Kyle Mastalinski created Elevator B, a towering 22-foot-tall bee apartment made with steel, cypress, and glass. The bee skyscraper mimics the silos where the bee colony once lived, and is equipped with insulation to offer the bees space to reside in the city even during cold winters.

Tomoko Azumi upcycles UK auction house waste catalogues into colorful Bee Hive

UK auction house Phillips de Pury & Company asked creatives from around the world to transform waste packaging and catalogs into habitats for bees, bats, or birds. Tomoko Azumi of tna design studio responded by upcycling the papers into a modern, colorful Bee Hive. 13 other architects, designers, and artists also utilized Phillips de Pury & Company waste materials to create funky homes for pollinators, and the auction house sold the creative designs to raise money for Adventure Ecology, founded by David de Rothschild.

MIT Media Lab creates controlled Synthetic Apiary to keep bees safe from pesticides, drought, climate change

Even MIT is trying to make a difference for bees. The MIT Media Lab and Mediated Matter created the indoor Synthetic Apiary, where researchers can control conditions to keep bees safe year-round from pesticides, drought, and climate change. While they're still testing the design, they did record the first ever birth of a bee in an artificial environment.
