Good news for ethical eaters (and drinkers) who like to relax with a cold one. Guinness beer is now suitable for vegans, as the Irish beer giant recently stopped using fish bladders for filtration in its keg beer.

On its website, the beer company explains that all Guinness Draught in keg format is now brewed without using isinglass, meaning it is suitable for those who eschew consumption of any part of any animal. Cans and bottles will follow suit by the end of 2017.

Every day around the world, approximately 10 million glasses of Guinness stout are consumed. That equates to 1.8 billion pints a year, as TreeHugger points out. With this new move, far fewer fish will be harvested for their precious glands.

According to a 2015 article published by Popular Science, Guinness has been striving to make its products vegan-friendly for several years. A spokesperson for the company said, “We are now pleased to have identified a new process through investment in a state-of- the-art filtration system at St James’s Gate which, once in place, will remove the use of isinglass in the brewing process.”

Without changing the recipe, the company has succeeded in developing a new filtration method which does not alter the product’s quality or taste – a win for everyone.
