Shipping container homes aren’t exactly unique—they’ve been used as dwellings all over the world for decades—but they’re gaining popularity across the USA and causing quite a stir in this established DC neighborhood. The apartment buildings in this Brookland area are being created with stacked grey and blue shipping containers, which stand out in sharp contrast to the quaint homes all around it. Brookland Equity Group recently received permits to demolish an old house and build four shipping block containers in its place, and some of the neighbors are undoubtedly concerned about how the buildings fit in with the area’s aesthetic. The apartments have yet to be decorated, so perhaps once they’ve been painted and gentrified a bit, there will be less hesitation about welcoming them to the neighborhood.
