In this challenging green renovation of a Bleeker street, NY residence, Yugon Kim (of IKD) transformed a small room containing a bulky, window-obstructing staircase into a charming office full of character. With an emphasis placed on reuse, both the historic cast iron staircase and the the room were given new life. The original stair was cut into sections and welded to form a study table, while a portion of each tread and riser was returned to its original location to create a bookshelf. The table and bookcase, despite being custom-built, proved considerably cost effective as very few additional materials were used. In addition to complimenting each other perfectly, these custom pieces open up the space to natural daylighting, reinventing this new office space for the client's specific needs.
