The New Raw turns plastic waste into valuable raw material

Every summer, the Greek islands are swarmed with tourists who bring a lot of plastic waste that ends up polluting the country’s beautiful beaches and environment. Among the worst offenders are the plastic water bottles that are left behind. In a bid to transform the plastic waste into a more valuable raw material, a Greece-based team of creatives launched The New Raw, an initiative and hands-on workshop that seeks to provide a sustainable solution to plastic pollution using digital fabrication techniques. Over two dozen participants were invited to upcycle the plastic rubbish. Projects completed include: RE_STOOL, a compression stool for plastic waste; MISSING PART, a construction material for filling in building cracks; PET for Pets, 3D-printed shelters for stray cats; ReCYCLAD3D, a 3D-printing hub for recycled plastic; and BOTTLE UP, a recycling reward system that motivates children to recycle plastic.
